3D X Ray micro-tomography as a tool to formulate metakaolin-based geopolymer-oil emulsions

Lambertin, D.*; Davy, C. A.*; Hauss, G.*; Planel, B.*; Marchand, B.*; Cantarel, V.

Proceedings of 1st International Conference on Innovation in Low-Carbon Cement and Concrete Technology (ILCCC 2019) (USB Flash Drive), 4 Pages, 2019/06

Composite materials made of geopolymer (GP) cement and organic liquids are useful to synthetize porosity-controlled media, for the management of radioactive organic liquid waste, or as phase change materials (PCM). Indeed, GP cements are able to integrate huge amounts of organic oils by direct emulsion in the fresh paste. The emulsion (GEOIL) remains stable during GP hardening. In this contribution, by using 3D X Ray micro Computed Tomography (micro CT) with a voxel size of 1 micron$$^{3}$$, we investigate the effect of formulation parameters (oil proportion, Si/Al molar ratio, surfactant) on the 3D oil droplet structure of GEOIL pastes. Samples are emulsified in the fresh state, and imaged in the hardened state. Porosity, oil droplet size distribution and mean distance between droplets are all determined quantitatively. It is observed that the presence of surfactant provides significantly smaller oil droplets. The increase in Si/Al ratio also decreases the oil droplet sizes, but to a lesser extent.

Clustered DNA damage sites induced by ionizing radiation have been suggested to have serious consequences to organisms. In this study, approaches based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulation have been applied to examine conformational changes and energetic properties of DNA molecules containing clustered damage sites consisting of 2 lesioned sites, 8-oxoG and AP site. After 1 nanosecond of MD simulation, one of the 6 DNA molecules containing a clustered damage site develop specific characteristic features: sharp bending at the lesioned site and weakening or complete loss of electrostatic interaction energy between 8-oxoG and bases locating on the complementary strand. From these results it is suggested that these changes would make it difficult for the repair enzyme to bind to the lesions within the clustered damage site and thereby result in a reduction of its repair capacity.

Outgassing of lower hybrid antenna modules during high-power long-pulse transmission

Goniche, M.*; Kazarian, F.*; Bibet, P.*; Maebara, Sunao; Seki, Masami; Ikeda, Yoshitaka; Imai, Tsuyoshi*

Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A, 23(1), p.55 - 65, 2005/01

Outgassing rates have been measured for long duration (100-4700 seconds) of RF transmission at high power density (50-200 MW/m$$^{2}$$) for waveguides made of OFHC copper, dispersoid copper, copper-coated carbon fiber composite and copper-coated graphite. The measurements were performed on multi-waveguide(2 to 8)mockups, using a test bed facility equipped with a 3.7 GHz klystron. The effect on the outgassing rate of waveguide surface temperature and of initial wall gas loading('conditioning'), is examined. It is concluded that an outgassing rate of 1$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$ Pam$$^{3}$$s$$^{-1}$$m$$^{-2}$$ and 5$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$ Pam$$^{3}$$s$$^{-1}$$m$$^{-2}$$ at 300$$^{circ}$$C and 400$$^{circ}$$C respectively, can be expected for the tested material. Based on these measurement results, it is further concluded that no additional pumping will be needed for the LHRF antenna proposed for ITER.

Study of residual stress for c/c composite by neutron scattering

Baba, Shinichi; Ishihara, Masahiro; Minakawa, Nobuaki; Suzuki, Junichi

Proceedings of International Conference on Advanced Technology in Experimental Mechanics 2003 (ATEM '03) (CD-ROM), 4 Pages, 2003/09

The aim of the present paper is to clarify the residual stress occuring in the c/c composite to improve the manufacturing process. The residual stress was measured by a neutron diffraction method using the RESA in the JRR-3M of JAERI in this study. As a results of the residual stress measurment, it was found that the residual stress of the ring type c/c composite is the comporessive stress, and the macroscopic residual strain/stress is absorbed mainly microstructural change such as pore shape change.
